i went to the Sunday Series collab with Callie, and it was mind-blowing! every part of each dish was special, from the garlicky/buttery bread with tasty prosciutto, to the uni that had a mac&cheese profile (but of course with high quality ingredients), to the shaved ice dessert with not too sweet cream and fresh fruits. the service was great and always attentive, and they gave us a new piece of fish since our first one smelled very slightly of ammonia. the space is also really nice, almost unassuming, except for the tuna head that sat at the open kitchen bar. would love to come again for Kato's regular menu!

If you can afford it and can get a reservation, try the bar tasting menu here for yummy, unique bites that balance flavor and use fresh, high quality ingredients. Their mocktail menu is also great! Service was a bit slow so be prepared for a long, leisurely evening. One of the best tasting menus I've had in LA but you definitely pay for it, lol.

I recently visited Kato Restaurant in downtown Los Angeles, drawn by its Michelin star and Taiwanese chef. While I had high expectations, the upscale casual ambiance and visible tables from the outside didn't quite match the Michelin-level experience I anticipated. The larger space was nice but didn't wow me, especially at this price point. The restaurant was quiet, and the servers were polite and knowledgeable. Some dishes were spot-on, evoking nostalgic feelings. The pig ear dish, lobster dish, and fish maw soup were incredible refinements of simple dishes while preserving Taiwanese authenticity. The A5 wagyu, though an amazing piece of meat, was paired with a passionfruit and guava sauce that seemed odd to me. Kato's take on a boba dessert was delicious. We celebrated our anniversary here, and they thoughtfully included a nice card with our names on it. Overall, a mixed experience with some standout dishes but not entirely meeting my high expectations.

I came here to celebrate my birthday. I've heard great things about this place and was excited to try a michelin star taiwanese restaurant. Our dining experience took a total of 3 1/2 hours, so I did have to pay extra for parking even after validation. Every dish was very delicious and I was surprisingly full after the entire meal. The lobster dish stood out the most. Funny part is I had the newport seafood lobster dish the day before, which was the inspiration behind kato's lobster dish. I could taste the similarity yet kato's took the dish to another level especially with the crispy bread underneath the lobster meat. The other dish that I enjoyed just as much was the yudu geng. It reminded me of the shark fin soups I had in Asia, but with an elegant and refined take. I also really liked their extra birthday dessert and handwritten postcard at the end of the dinner. Overall, food was delicious. A few of the dishes didn't feel like I was dining at a Taiwanese restaurant but they definitely tasted amazing. Service was also amazing, as they took time to explain each dish and the inspiration behind them. The mismatch between the themed plates for the dishes and the utensils was interesting too as I took it for a mix of contemporary and Asian roots.
